Description

What is PSU?
 

Polysulfone (PSU), a high performance plastic, was first commercialised by BASF in 1965.  It is a semi-transparent, very high temperature resistant amorphous thermoplastic that is used where the performance requirements exceed the capabilities of other engineering plastics such as polyamide, PBT and polyacetals. PSU can also replace thermosets, metals and ceramics. The main features of  PSU is the high stiffness, high continuous operating temperatures, high mechanical strength, good electrical insulation properties and good dimensional stability. The continuous operating temperature of PSU is 160 °C. PSU is hydrolysis resistant in hot water and steam at temperatures of up to 149 °C (300 °F). They also offer high chemical resistance to acidic and salt solutions, and good resistance to detergents. The main drawbacks of PSU and PES are their susceptibility to stress cracking in certain solvents and poor weathering properties. PSU resins are often reinforced with glass or carbon fibre for additional strength.
