What is PEI?

Introduced by GE Plastics in 1982, polyetherimide (PEI) is an amorphous thermoplastic offering an impressive collection of attributes such as high heat resistance, stiffness, impact strength, transparency, high mechanical strength, good electrical properties, high flame resistance, low smoke generation, and broad chemical resistance. In addition to its unique combination of properties matching those of high-priced specialty plastics, PEI exhibits the processability of traditional engineering thermoplastics, although higher melt temperatures are required. The excellent thermal stability is demonstrated by the maintenance of stable melt viscosity after multiple regrinds and remolding. Furthermore, this excellent flow resin can be used for the molding of complicated parts and thin sections.

-       Electromechanical systems such as fuses, gears, bearings, solenoid bodies, ignition switches and oil pump drives.


Due to the characteristics of amorphous plastic, it has relatively weak chemical resistance, creep resistance and wear resistance. Notched area, such as sharp corner and edge, should be rounded to prevent stress cracking.
